Why is MyNetDiary not even attempting to import Active Energy or Resting Energy from iOS Health app? Topic

I have noticed that MyNetDiary did not have calories expended being imported. In iOS Health that is Active Energy and REsting Energy. AFAIK.

I went to check the sync settings, and those options (amoung others) are not even availble in the MyNetDiary sync settings.

Surely this is a major problem?

Or does anyone get energy imported from iOS Health?

I am using an Apple Watch along with an iPhone 11

Thanks,
Norman

Hi there NormanC-
Thanks for reaching out! Our support team will be getting back with you. Thanks, Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

I’m having the same issue. iPhone 12, Apple Watch Series 3. No transferring of activity from iPhone to MyNetDiary app

This is what I got back from a support person:
-----------------------------------------
MyNetDiary cannot import "Active Energy" (typically - calories) from iOS Health because iOS Health defines them as calories "above Resting Metabolic Rate," but MyNetDiary already accounts for some number of calories above Resting Metabolic Rate that are part of normal daily life, included into Weight Maintenance calories (such as preparing food, shopping, cleaning, walking around.) Importing "Active Calories" would result in double-counting of calories in MyNetDiary.
------------------------------------------
I replied:
What about the rest of the calories that I expend actually doing exercise?

It’s not importing that either. Which makes the whole idea of keeping track of calories in My Net Diary a joke.

In any case, why can’t I choose which calorie measuring method i want to use?

I would expect that the “measured” calories burnt coming from my Apple Watch (or fit bit or whatever) to be more accurate than an guesstimate from my Net diary.

----------------------
I understand that MND supplies a guestimate of base energy using equations that are generally accepted and trusted.

Thats great for people who don't have a watch or some device that keeps track of motion and calories expended.

But those of us who DO have such devices need to be able to get that information into MND. So just let us specify that we want to use our device calories expended (active or resting).

That's OUR choice.

WIthout this, MND is only useful for tracking food, NOT tracking the balance between calories in - calories out.

I was delighted to find MND a while ago because it seemed to solve the problems that My Fitness Pal and Fitbit have of not giving us useful graphs, and more egregiously, not letting us get OUR OWN DATA out in a useful format for graphing.

I was using a Fitbit, which data got imported just fine into MND. All sorts of data.

Then I switched to an Apple Watch, and have finally got to setting up MND again.

And found THIS incredible problem. I despair. I really do.

I just want to see all my data together so I can run useful graphs and analysis.

I've been kicked in the nuts by My Fitness Pal, Fitbit and now seemingly MND.

Dear NormanC & U1195099962,

I'm sorry if it was confusing.

MyNetDiary already takes into account the burned calories you spend daily. MyNetDiary Exercise section is a place for "extra" caloric expenditure, the calories you burn beyond your lifestyle and job responsibilities. The extra calories are used in your daily energy balance along with your PA level.

By the way, on MyNetDiary Apple Watch App, you can see the three rings (red, green and blue.) MyNetDiary Apple Watch App copies this Activity information from the Fitness App "built-in" to your Apple Watch device and Fitness App "built-in" to your iPhone app (https://www.apple.com/apple-fitness-plus/) so you can see the Activities Calories from MyNetDiary Apple Watch App.

Sorry that we cannot accommodate your request now. And thank you for bringing this up! I'll pass your suggestion to our developers to see if we can add Active and Resting Energy to the Apple Health App Link in the future. We'll review your request and count your vote.

Please bear with us.

Sincerely,
Dmitry S.

Answer this one question. What is inaccurate about the Total energy from Apple Health? ie just adding Active and Resting Energy

And why is this less useful than the ESTIMATE EQUATIONS you use for your calculations.

Numbers, by the way, that you do NOT record, nor let us graph along with the exercise calories. Therefore completely negating the point of being able to track calories.

I can't calculate my calorie deficit, therefore I can't calculate what weight I should be losing, versus the weight I am actually losing.

I don't understand why you (and every other company by the way) claim to be helping us, but then don't let us see the data WE need to see.

I just want to cry.

Or rage at you and everyone else. But that won't particularly help

The underlying assumptions of your replies are "Just trust us"

Well, the entire fitness industry has lost my trust over the last 30 years.

Its very clear that no one knows anything for sure about fat loss and the relationship between calories and weight. Sure there is a proportion of the population that standard models work for, and they are well catered to.

The rest of us have to try different things on ourselves to see what works.

To do that, we have to have the data.

You telling me that you know what is best for me, in the face of my 30 years of experience of myself, is arrogant and condescending.

Do better
