Hard boiled egg protein replacement Topic

Happy New Year everyone!!

In the spirit of improving my diet I was looking at my MyNetDiary log when I noticed that the 2 hard boiled eggs I eat for breakfast have a ton of cholestoral. I love eating them to get more protein in my diet. I also love the convenience of grabbing 2 hard boiled eggs from the fridge in the morning when there is little time for breakfast. I could use egg whites, but I would then need to make an omlet taking more time.

Does anybody have a suggestion about what to eat in plave of my 2 hard boiled eggs? Thank you.

Mark

Hi Mark998, the US Dietary Guidelines have removed the cholesterol limit for otherwise healthy people. However, if your doc has recommended limiting cholesterol content given your medical history, then follow his/her recommendation.

But more ideas for proteins:

I like the nonfat high protein yogurts - Chobani 100 and Oikos Triple Zero. I add orange-flavored fish oil to my yogurt to boost omega-3 on days I don't eat fish.

Microwaved egg whites in a mug. Add spices. Seriously, they are delicious and fast. Soak mug in water before trying to wash.

1/2 cup cottage cheese.

Leftover meat/fish/poultry for breakfast! I sometimes have tunafish with reduced fat mayo.

Thanks for these great ideas. They all sound good.

egg whites in a mug with spices as suggested chopped up a little insid a small whole grain small wrap with veggies, I like salad greens with a kale mix and low cal dressing of choice. Make a wrap and go.

Greetings Mark- I like 2 eggs scrambled in non stick spray with 2 T of brown rice (just enough to give it some chewy texture) and chopped/sauteed spinach and scallions mixed into the scramble and then cooked.
Enjoy! Joanna (Dietician)

All,

I have been eating 1/2 cup of egg whites in an 8 ounce coffee cup. I microwave for 2.5 to 3 min, and add pepper when I'm done. they are delicious. The egg whites seem to be 66 calories while 2 hard boiled eggs seems to be 150 calories so saving 85 calories as well. The egg whites seem to be more filling and more satisfying than 2 eggs, and have no cholesterol.

Thanks for the tip!

So glad you tried and like the egg whites, Mark! Yes, egg whites are mostly protein and they are super filling. Love the low calories too.

Hi,
I take 1 hard boiled egg daily with egg yolk. I m 40 years old and doing gym regularly with weight 77.2 kg. Is there any harm to take egg yolk as well.

Hi Amshoeb1, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines have removed the restriction of dietary cholesterol for otherwise healthy people. However, people with very high risk of cardiovascular disease or heart attack should follow their cardiologist's recommendation for dietary restrictions, especially for saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, and sodium. These folks should be careful with how often they consume foods that are particularly high in cholesterol: organ meats (e.g. liver, brains, kidneys), egg yolk, shrimp , and squid.

But for folks who do not have an increased risk, the current guideline does not include a restriction of dietary cholesterol. This is happy news for us who love whole eggs!

If you are concerned, then talk with your health care provider. You could get a blood lipoprotein panel done before changing your diet, and then 3 months after changing your diet if you are concerned about your ability to handle dietary cholesterol.

Best,
Kathy (Dietitian)
