Can purple sweet potatoes also cause carotenemia or just the orange ones, both are high in vitamin A. I turned orange from pumpkins. Thanks!

Hi Turducken,
I hope this note finds you doing well! Prolonged and excessive intake of any food containing large amounts of carotene can cause carotenemia. The purple hue in sweet potatoes comes from anthocyanins which are a type of phytochemical. Purple sweet potatoes actually contain more anthocyanins than blackberries or eggplant. Yes, these potatoes also contain a large amount of vitamin A. Hope this is helpful! Joanna (MyNetDiary Dietitian)

Thank sos much, Joanna! Sounds like I should limit intake to avoid becoming an Oompa Loompa again!
