Products we like! Topic

Hi Folks, I want to start this thread about products we like to use in our cooking. A friend told me about "Better Than Bouillon" bases. I LOVE their Roasted Chicken - it was delicious in my most recent soup recipe (a lentil soup). My friend is vegan and she told me that theirs is the best vegetarian base - so I will try that in my next vegetarian soup.

So, tell me about products you use that you think are really good!

Best,

How high is the sodium?

Smoked sea salt. My husband picked some up a couple of years ago at this spice kiosk in Bryant Park in NYC and it is delicious. We use it on pretty much everything. We were running out and I was able to find some here:

Better Than Bouillon - "Reduced Sodium" beef has 510 mg per 1 tsp (1 tsp makes 8 fl oz). So even reduced sodium is not low sodium. If you have to keep sodium super low, then maybe a lower sodium broth option is a good idea.

I always look at the big picture. If my bowl of stew or soup is my main meal, and I can keep the sodium to 600-700 mg, then I go with that. I set my goal to 2300 mg sodium per day.

Justjennie, smoked salt sounds delicious. I use smoked black pepper on some dishes.

Better Than Bouillon also has 3 low sodium choices. I use the chicken all the time and its very good. I get mine at Costco but sometimes you can find it in grocery stores. Follow this link to order directly from them. http://www.betterthanbouillon.com/products

I watch my sodium intake and there is a whole section of low salt spices from Penzey's. https://www.penzeys.com/ My favorite is Mural of Flavor. Good on just about anything!

Way Better Snacks: Salt & Cracked Pepper Sprouted Barley Crackers. Hey, these are still crackers and very calories dense but compared to other brands, they are higher in fiber and lower in sodium. Their other flavors are higher in salt so I stick with this flavor.

14 crackers (28g)
110 kcal
110 mg sodium
15 g total carbs: 4 g dietary fiber, 0 g sugar
3 g protein

I find a 1/2 serving (7 crackers) is perfect to go with 1 oz cheese.

My new favorite snack: Harvest Snaps Snap Pea Crisps. They also have lentil ones. They come in a bunch of flavors. They're gluten free and really good.

110 calories for 22 pieces (28g)
